Bergen aan Zee beach
Bergen aan Zee lies a little further from Strand49, around 24 kilometres to the south. The road there winds through the dunes before arriving in a small seaside village with a character all its own. With its broad sandy beach and five beach pavilions, it feels more established and atmospheric than many of the newer resorts along the coast.
How to get there
Bergen aan Zee is around a 30-minute drive from Strand49. Parking in the village is paid. You can also cycle there, but at around 24 kilometres each way, it’s more of a proper day out than a quick ride.
Beach pavilions
Bergen aan Zee has five beach pavilions, ranging from laid-back seaside spots to places with a more refined food scene.
- Strandpaviljoen Noord has a Mediterranean feel and a large raised terrace overlooking the beach.
- Zuid is spacious and lively, and especially popular on sunny days.
- Bossa Nova brings a touch of South America to the coast, both in its atmosphere and its menu.
- De Jongens combines industrial-chic interiors with a relaxed, barefoot-luxury feel.
- Noorderlicht lies a little further north and serves dishes with Mediterranean and Israeli influences.
More than just a beach
There’s more to Bergen aan Zee than sand and sea. The village is home to a sea aquarium, making it a good option for families on a less-than-sunny day. Just behind the village, the Noordhollands Duinreservaat opens out into a vast landscape of dunes and woodland, criss-crossed with walking and cycling routes.
Combine the beach, aquarium and dunes and you’ve easily got a full day out.
Visiting with your dog
Bergen aan Zee falls within the Municipality of Bergen, where the rules for dogs differ from those in the Municipality of Schagen. Restrictions are tighter on the busier central sections of beach during the summer months, while dogs have more freedom outside the main season.
Bear in mind that dogs are not permitted everywhere in the neighbouring Noordhollands Duinreservaat.
